Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner has begun reorganizing City Hall by removing several department heads and appointing interim managers.

The department heads were notified late last week that they had the option to resign with a severance package or be fired.

Ald. Stephanie Kifowit (3rd) said she thinks City Council members "should have been involved a little more" in Weisner's decision to terminate department heads. Kifowit said according to the municipal code the City Council could reinstate department heads with a two-thirds majority vote.

Weisner appointed his former campaign manager, Gerald Galloway, as interim assistant to the mayor. Galloway said he will be working to help implement Weisner's platform over the next several months.

Bill Catching, who was deputy chief of staff to former Mayor David Stover, has been appointed interim airport manager. He replaces Bob Rieser, who held that post as well as the position of public works director. Daryl Devick, assistant director of public works, has been named interim director.

The FBI honored Rieser in a December City Council meeting for cooperating in an investigation that led to bribery charges against former Aurora Ald. Jim Meisch. Meisch entered a guilty plea to the charges earlier this month.

Roger Goodson, assistant superintendent of water production and manager of water administration, replaces Arnold Eggleston as interim superintendent of water production.

Freda Davis-Mendoza has been named interim director of neighborhood redevelopment. She replaces Charles Huff. Davis-Mendoza is a customer relations specialist and former Community Resource Center coordinator.

Fred Rodgers replaces Ron Ford was interim director of youth and sports activities. Rodgers was the assistant director of the department.

Also removed from her position was Corporation Counsel Patricia Supergan. Serving as interim corporation counsel will be Alayne Scatterday, former city prosecutor for building and maintenance code hearings. The responsibilities of Larry Langston, community safety director, have been shifted to the Police Department and will be overseen by Cmdr. Michael Fuller.

Lyle Rolfe was removed from his position as Aurora Community Television Channel 10 director, but no replacement has been named.

170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community.
