My name is Greg Sill, and I work in the New Iowan Center to help anyone new to the state. We can help anyone new to the state with issues such as searching for employment, searching for housing, and searching for education, as well as other areas. Our website is http://www.iowaworkforce.org/centers/newiowan/index.html I work mainly with migrant and seasonal farmworkers all around western Iowa. One of the issues I often see is a lack of resources for people who want to learn English as a second language, as well as people who want to learn Spanish as a second language. A gentleman named Donald Hruby came into my office yesterday asking if there was a way he could volunteer time and practice Spanish. He has served in the Peace Corps before and didn't have an opportunity to really use Spanish now. We were talking and he said there may be other people in his situation that would love to practice Spanish and volunteer their time helping others learn a new language and make their lives better. I know of a program starting in Creston, IA right now that is looking for someone who is willing to volunteer their time and teach Spanish to English speakers, and eventually English to Spanish speakers. If anyone in Iowa is interested in a program such as this, please e-mail me and we can see what is available in your area. Thank you.
