Brian McConnaughey and his sister, Beth Ann Dahan, have been co-owners of Soleil Café in Teal Square in Somerville for about 2 1/2 years.
What does Soleil mean?
We named the café Soleil Café because "Soleil" is French for sun. My brother-in-law is French, and my sister was in the Peace Corps in France. Also, I lived in the French and German part of Switzerland for five years.
What's the main focus of Soleil Café?
We do catering for the most part. We also put a heavy emphasis on fresh, healthy and global foods. Our T-shirts say "fresh, healthy and global." We also make a lot of eclectic sandwiches. Our coffee comes from Rao's Café, an Amherst coffee shop, and it's very good coffee.
What's your style of cooking?
Southern French, Japanese fusion and contemporary American. I think people, especially our generation, are really starting to see that eating is life, and eating is an experience. People want healthy, on-the-go food, but they also value well-preparation, and that's what we have here.
What types of places to you cater to?
We cater in Somerville, Cambridge, Boston, and we even reach places as far as Cape Cod and Maine!
Who are your customers?
Since we are in Teele Square, we get a lot of the surrounding community, including Tufts students. We also have a lot of corporate clients all over the city of Boston.

| Military Option sparks concerns The U.S. military, struggling to fill its voluntary ranks, is allowing recruits to meet part of their military obligations by serving in the Peace Corps. Read why there is rising opposition to the program among RPCVs. Director Vasquez says the agency has a long history of accepting qualified applicants who are in inactive military status. John Coyne says "Not only no, but hell no!" Latest: RPCV Chris Matthews to discuss the issue on Hardball tonight. |
| Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
