AURORA — Mayor Tom Weisner is claiming credit for some $5.5 million in federal grant money that he attributes to several personal visits with local legislators during a trip to Washington in May.
Weisner said that Aurora was originally slated to receive about $1.3 million in funding for the Sullivan Road bridge project as part of the recently approved federal transportation bill.
But after a series of meetings with Illinois Sens. Dick Durbin and Barack Obama and House Speaker Dennis Hastert, the mayor was able to convince them to include an additional $5.5 million in the spending bill for two other Aurora projects, he said. The trip to Washington, Weisner said this week, "turned out to be well worth the effort."
Of the additional $5.5 million in grants, $3 million will be used to help reconstruct East New York Street between Farnsworth Avenue and the DuPage County Line, while $2.5 million will be used to widen and resurface Indian Trail between Farnsworth Avenue and Mitchell Road.
Both grants, however, account for only a portion of each project's overall cost. The East New York Street work is estimated at more than $15 million while the Indian Trail project will cost about $8 million.
"This will definitely help us get going, though," said Daryl Devick, the city's interim public works director.
He said both projects are still "two to five years down the line," and that the city will seek other state and county grants to help pay for the work.
