McCain sponsors bill to delay payment to Uzbekistan
"Paying our bills is important. But more important is America's standing up for itself, avoiding the misimpression that we overlook massacres and avoiding cash transfers to the treasury of a dictator," said Sen. John McCain., who sponsored the amendment that will block payment. Senator John McCain of Arizona is a strong supporter of expanding the Peace Corps.

U.S. Senate withholds Uzbekistan payment
WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Senate has voted to delay a $23 million payment to Uzbekistan in protest against alleged human rights abuses in that country.
The payment, for past use of the Karshi-Khanabad airbase, will be postponed for at least a year, the BBC reported Thursday.
In July, the Uzbek government asked the United States to leave the base, after Washington criticized the government's violent suppression of May protests in the town of Andijan, in which up to 500 people are said to have been killed.
U.S. forces had used the base for operations in neighboring Afghanistan for nearly four years.
"Paying our bills is important. But more important is America's standing up for itself, avoiding the misimpression that we overlook massacres and avoiding cash transfers to the treasury of a dictator," said Sen. John McCain., who sponsored the amendment that will block payment.
The Arizona Republican said the actions of Uzbek President Islam Karimov were so alarming that the Senate should be considering sanctions against him, "not how to transfer millions of taxpayers' dollars to his government."

| Why blurring the lines puts PCVs in danger When the National Call to Service legislation was amended to include Peace Corps in December of 2002, this country had not yet invaded Iraq and was not in prolonged military engagement in the Middle East, as it is now. Read the story of how one volunteer spent three years in captivity from 1976 to 1980 as the hostage of a insurrection group in Colombia in Joanne Marie Roll's op-ed on why this legislation may put soldier/PCVs in the same kind of danger. |
| The Peace Corps Library Peace Corps Online is proud to announce that the Peace Corps Library is now available online. | Friends of the Peace Corps 170,000 strong 170,000 is a very special number for the RPCV community - it's the number of Volunteers who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961. It's also a number that is very special to us because March is the first month since our founding in January, 2001 that our readership has exceeded 170,000. And while we know that not everyone who comes to this site is an RPCV, they are all "Friends of the Peace Corps." Thanks everybody for making PCOL your source of news for the Returned Volunteer community. |
