Hello, this is Joel Runnels (Kenya 97-00), was living in Portland 2000-2001 was a member of this RPCV group. Some of you who were around at that time will remember me, I'd hope...

I am now in Uganda working with VSO on a development project at school for the deaf in a very rural area of that country. We have recently drafted, and passed, our 5-year strategic growth plan. We will need to write a number of grant proposals to implement our plan, and I don't think we'll manage it all by "pen and paper". I have been thinking about this now, as I'm visiting my parents in Minnesota over the holidays. I need to get a donation of a laptop computer, and bring it back with me to Uganda. I can train the administrators and teacher of this school to use it, before I leave in August 2003.

Can anyone advise me as to individuals, and or organizations to contact about this matter? I can be reached at joelrunnels@yahoo.com

Part-time Employment Opportunity
Community Representative

Dear Peace Corps Friends,

AYUSA International is a non-profit high school foreign exchange student organization. We welcome teenagers from over 60 countries worldwide and provide host family placement and ongoing supervision for 5 and 10 month academic programs. We are a community of citizens who believe the cross-cultural exchange of ideas, values and friendship, leads to greater acceptance, and, ultimately, a more peaceful coexistence.

As Peace Corps alumnae, we know you share this vision and we invite you to apply for the position of Community Representative. The ideal candidate should enjoy teenagers, have a strong desire to communicate cross-culturally and feel comfortable networking in the community. Basic responsibilities include recruiting and interviewing host families, providing ongoing support to families and students and maintaining professional relationships with local high school.

This position pays a stipend per student as all as travel incentives, leadership enhancement opportunities, and most of all, a chance to promote a more peaceful world for our youth to inherit.

Full training and ongoing support is provided by one of 3 branch offices located in Oregon. Please apply to staff@ayusa.org or phone toll-free 1-888-552-9872.

Hello,
Jason Lee is a PCV from Portland, who is in Ghana working in the lovely mountain top village of Amedzope. He has been trying to get a program to bring bicycles to the community. I've got the program to do just that, we've done 39 workshops providing about 580 bikes since 1999. The only problem is, Village Bicycle Project is broke. We can do the workshop for $250, and 20 people will get discounted bikes and a day of repair training. Jason's email is jasonlee5575@yahoo.com

I'm running Village Bicycle Project from my house and garage in Moscow Idaho. With partners at Bike Works in Seattle we send two containers a year to Ghana. We also have partners in Boston, New York, and UK. my email is ghanabikes@yahoo.com

I'll be in Portland around Dec. 19 and January 4-6, if anyone would like to meet about fundraising for Jason Lee's project or other bicycle/peace corps/post peace corps/socializing stuff.
Have power point, will travel!

The folks at Amedzope would sure like to get some bikes to help them get to farms, market, jobs, etc. Hope you can help.
Thanks, Dave Peckham, RPCV Gabon, 83-85

Hi,

I am writing as a follow up to David Peckham's email regarding the Village Bicycle Program. Amedzofe is a somewhat remote village on top of a mountain in tHE Volta Region of Ghana. a favorite destination for tourists, the community itself is poor but hard working. The Village Bicycle Project has helped some neighboring communities acquire and receive training for bikes at a discounted price. Amedzofe would greatly benefit this both for personal and business use. My project is helping the town develop tourism, and we would like our guides to be able to use bikes to perform errands around the Avatime traditional area. Additionally, as David mentioned, people could greatly benefit riding the many trips to their farm, market, and other destinations. Any donations to the Village Bicycle Project could be made through David Pecham, RPCV Gabon, 83-85 at ghanabikes@yahoo.com, and would be greatly appreciated by Amedzofe.
Thanks.
Jason Lee, PCV
