SO...
After about a 7 month long application process I am finally awaiting the results of my medical exam. Things are looking good as I have no medical conditions that would prevent me from service. However, the anticipation is killing me...
My dilemma:
I am currently a Senior University student graduating in May. I am studying International Affair and have a background in Spanish.
My orginal nomination was for an Agr/For program in Latin America but due to a conflicting departure date I was re-nominated for the same program in French speaking West Africa (im pumped!). Along with accepting the nomination I had to sign an agreement saying that I would begin learning French before my departure date (which I have no idea when it will be). Because I am a University student and already taking a full load of classes so I can graduate I was not able to sign up for a French class through school, but I was told that an accredited academic program such as Rossetta Stone or the equivalent would suffice.
Unfortunatley my computer was stolen earlier in the year and I have been trying to save up to purchase another one mainly for the purposes of learning french to fulfill the agreement I signed. I am worried that I will not have my requirement fulfilled and worried that it could delay a potential placememt.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? How and when will I be contacted by the PC to follow up on my progress? How will the PC react to my situation? Id appreciate any insight into this matter. |

If I were you, I would see if they would let you do either the Michel Thomas or Pimsleur audio programs. Unless you can use Rosetta Stone for free (through a public/university library), don't waste your money. The program teaches almost no grammar and vocabulary is relatively weak; it is based on the idea of immersion directly into the language and learning as you go. I think you would end up with the same, but probably better, results as far as vocabulary and especially pronunciation with Michel Thomas or Pimsleur (at least to get you started). I don't know how comprehensive the language training is once you arrive or what level you are expected to be at once you arrive, but I Rosetta Stone is overhyped in my opinion. So if they'll let you do that, then ask them about other options I mentioned above. |
