POTOMAC -- Eunice Kennedy Shriver underwent surgery today after breaking her hip at her suburban Washington home.
Doctors at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington began surgery about 7 p.m. on the 81-year-old sister of the late President John F. Kennedy.
The accident occurred this morning when Mrs. Shriver fell in the office of her Potomac home, said a spokeswoman for her son, Democratic Delegate Mark Shriver.
The spokeswoman, Kim Elliott, said the injury was not life-threatening and Mrs. Shriver had been awake and talking.
"She is very upbeat," Kim Elliott said.
Elliott said no further reports would be made on Mrs. Shriver's condition until Wednesday morning.
Eunice Shriver, whose sister Rosemary is mentally retarded, organized the first Special Olympics in 1968 and serves as honorary chairwoman of the nonprofit group.
Mrs. Shriver broke her left leg last year in a head-on car crash on Cape Cod. In 2000, she spent seven weeks in a Baltimore hospital recovering from a postoperative infection.
Mark Shriver is running for Congress in Maryland's 8th District. His mother has worked on his campaign.
Mrs. Shriver's husband, Sargent Shriver, was the founding director of the Peace Corps and the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 1972. Their daughter, Maria Shriver, is a correspondent for NBC News.
