I am a Canadian Citizen, and so obviously can't join the Peace Corps. However, I would like to volunteer for about two years or so in a remote African Village. I've looked into a fair number of Canadian organizations, but many of them either cost a lot of money, or require a couple years of professional experience in specific fields. I have already been on short-term volunteer trips/ internships, and so have a bit of experience with developing countries. From my own experience, and that of people I've talked to, it seems like a good idea to just go to your country of choice, scout out a good, reliable NGO to work with, and go from there. Can anyone tell me which NGOs or governmental organizations work in partnership with the Peace Corps in Africa? Also, is it the NGOs/governmental organizations or the Peace Corps itself which organizes housing, bicycles, short-wave radios, etc. for volunteers in remote villages? Finally, I'm aware that the Peace Corps gives language training. Would it be possible for me to take the course in a given country (at a fee)? Answers to any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. |
