As you know John R. Bolton's nomination to be our ambassador to the United Nations has been held up by questions regarding his treatment of subordinates and his derogatory statements over the years regarding the United Nations as an organization. I, like you, joined the Peace Corps (in 1963 in the Philippines) to make the world a better place and to demonstrate that I, an American, cared about people less fortunate than I. As you also know, the last and best chance for many, many men, women and children to be safe, fed and healthy is the United Nations. Whatever its administrative problems, the organization is a symbol of hope for the hopeless. John Bolton's denigration of the United Nations sends a message to the world that America does not care about their most basic needs. Please, join with me in sending e-mails or calling the following key Senators on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and urging them to OPPOSE CONFIRMATION OF JOHN R. I never heard of John Bolton until his nomination however I would note that if the statement, "... the last and best chance for many, many men, women and children to be safe, fed and healthy is the United Nations" is true, then may God have mercy. Business as usual in the United Nations should not continue. If Mr. Bolton is confirmed, I would hope he would stand up and shout when he sees injustice, corruption and wasteful spending. I hope he would get in someone's face and challenge them to do what is right. Don't back down. There are too many people dying in Africa and and other parts of the world waiting for the United Nations to "do something". If Mr. Bolton becomes ambassador and offends someone in the UN, I would suggest that the UN form a committee, talk about the alleged offence for ten years and submit a 12, 000 page report with recommendations to UN's general assembly. |
