Hey everyone. I have been researching various ideas of what I want to achieve in life and I now feel that I would like to be part of this program. So I would like the opinion of the community, what are some good steps to getting into the peace corp and what are some chosen careers you have chosen for yourself. I am currently 17 year old student highschool student in california. Thanks for the support!

Hi,
I think it's great that you are thinking ahead. However, most Peace Corps Volunteers are in their twenties and most have college degrees in SOMETHING (so most go right after college). You don't have to have an established career to be in the Peace Corps and you don't have to have a college major in anything specific.

I'd recommend that you go to college and study a language if possible. It doesn't have to be your major but if you could take some semesters of SOMETHING it will help (French, Spanish, Chinese probably most helpful). Also, spending a year or a semester abroad in any country is a great experience.

Then just apply near the end of your college! Major in something that you might want to do AFTER the Peace Corps. This is the fastest way, because if you don't want to go to college, you'll need to take some time to built up relevant skills.

I recommend going to the Peace Corps website (www.peacecorps.gov) and going to "What Do Volunteers Do." There you can read about the "qualifications" for each of the different areas (Environmental, Education, etc etc).

Good luck!
