My name is Erika and I am a freshman at a high school in Illinois.
My mom was talking to me about how when she was in high school, they had brochures and things about joining the peace corps. Now I am curious as to why I have seen nothing on the peace corps.
I didn't know how to directly contact them, so I posted this here for more opinions.

It is great to hear your enthusiasm from someone your age! To answer your question, Peace Corps has changed a great deal since its creation:

It is a much more technically oriented organization that it was when started in the 60s. As such, the volunteers currently being recruited are much more skilled and have better education/experience than those in the past. You are excited, and when you are 18 you can apply. I recommend that you talk with a recruiter at a local college campus (most big state schools have some PC representative). If you can't find a school with a PC program, goto their website: www.peacecorps.gov and email someone on their contact information page and ask about recruiters in your area.
Although you are not old enough to be an official volunteer yet (minimum 18), you can plan your high school and college education in such a way to make yourself more desirable as an applicant. Peace Corps is looking for people with a college degree or comparable life experience (working in one of the fields listed on their website for multiple years).

Good luck to you!
