DAYTON | More than 440 people lined up Wednesday morning to get food trucked in by the international hunger relief organization, Feed the Children.
The food drop outside the Life Enrichment Center. 515 N. Irwin St., was the result of a lunchtime conversation in Rome between Tony Hall, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations' food and agricultural agencies, and Feed the Children's executive director, Larry Jones.
Hall asked Jones when the last time Feed the Children — which has done work in all 50 states and 62 countries — came to Dayton, his hometown.
"This is what happened," Hall said, as volunteers prepared to give 440 people with tickets free boxes of food and hygiene products.
Maria Williams, 20, stood in line with her 15-month-old son, Dustin Jr. Her husband had been laid off but recently found a full-time job.
"We're so backed up on bills," she said. "Every little bit helps."

 | Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
