Sep. 9--CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- Michael Walden-Newman, director of the Wyoming Taxpayers Association, has accepted the position of chief investment officer with the Wyoming State Treasurer's Office.

Walden-Newman has worked for the association since 1987 and became the director in 1990. He will transition into the position in mid- to late-October. He replaces former chief investment officer Glenn Shaffer, who retired Aug. 31.

Walden-Newman holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon and a master's degree in public administration from Louisiana State University. He also has served on the U.S. Minerals Management Service's Royalty Policy Advisory Committee and the State Treasurer's Advisory Council.

Walden-Newman said Lummis approached him about the position earlier this month.

"It's a terrific opportunity to work for somebody I admire so much," he said. "It's exciting and important work. I'm tickled to be working with such a talented bunch."

But, he added, "In a way, it's bittersweet. I love my job (with the Taxpayers Association)."

Lummis said Walden-Newman is a talented and dedicated professional who will keep the state's best interests in mind.

"I am absolutely confident that he will succeed at every turn," she said.

The Wyoming State Treasurer's Office invests more than $5 billion of the state's money. In past years, those inv

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
