Leadership confronts mavericks
Rule change would give Sen. Frist new appointment power
By Geoff Earle

[Excerpt]

If Minority Leader Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) were to lose his seat — he trails former Rep. John Thune (R-S.D.) by four percentage points in the latest poll — successors would have only two weeks to mount a race for Democratic leader in the Senate.

That leadership election also would occur the week of Nov. 15. A Democratic leadership aide said the caucus was expected to conduct only routine business that week. Although no Democrat has given any hint of maneuvering for the job, and Daschle has led in other polls, Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) are both mentioned as possible candidates to challenge Minority Whip Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) if Daschle’s leadership job were to become vacant.
