1967: marian kaplan served in Afghanistan in Kabul beginning in 1967
Returned Peace Corps Volunteer marian kaplan can be contacted at mkaplanacitlinkdnet
Country of Service: Afghanistan
Training Group: 12
Cities you served in: Kabul
Arrival Year: 1967
Departure Year: 1969
Work Description:
Volunteer secretary in the Peace Corps office.
Other Countries you served in, Training Group Name Arrival Year, Departure Year, Work Description:
I worked for 3 years in Bangladesh as a missionary after college as a physical therapist.
Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
I became a Christian while serving in the PC in Afghanistan and felt a real draw to return to Asia. I graduated from college in 1974 and at the end of the 70's returned to Asia (Bangladesh) working in a leprosy hospital. I continued working with leprosy (Hansen's Disease) patients both in Louisiana and in San Francisco when I returned from Bangladesh. Presently I am working as a physical therapist in Needles, Ca. and trying to retire.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
My PC experience changed my life. It gave me purpose. I saw handicapped beggars in the street and knew I wanted to be able to work with and help the handicapped. I knew, even though I was in my 30's that I had to go back to school.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
I would love to hear from anyone from Group 12. I see names like Peaches, John S, etc. and would love to be able to get in touch with them.
Any message for returned volunteers?:
Remember how much PC gave you and pass the message around. When I timidly spoke at a local high school, I was pleasantly surprised at their interest.
