In 1965 Comas was the largest Peace Corps community development program in the Lima area. There were about 20 volunteers and one PC baby in Comas at that time. Dick Welch and Jerry Drake had recently arrived and were working to establish a cooperative that would sell kerosene and potatoes. Comas had become the showpiece for many visitors. In fact, in November 1965 Bobby Kennedy arrived to visit Father Bill Frances, who was Cardinal Cushing's nephew. Dick and Jerry immediately seized this opportunity and asked Bobby dedicate their coop, which was located right next to Father Bill's church.
