Hi to any Solomon Islands volunteer who can answer my question. My sister-in-law has started an NGO to assist in small projects in Solomon Islands and learned that Peace Corps pulled out ten years ago. She is interested in seeing how to get PC back in. Before pursuing too far it would be nice to know why they left. I know the various potential reasons, but would like to know more specifically from anyone who might know. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance. Tim Kasten

A politcal coupe in the Solomons in 2000 created a situation that was deemed too dangerous to continue PC program. Part of the decision was because the militants controlled the only international airport in the country so PC couldn't be certain of their ability to get volunteers out of the country in case of (medical) emergencies. Medical facilities in SI are limited so this was a major concern.
I was a volunteer there 95 -97 then worked for PC as training director 98 and 99 and stayed in SI until 2002. Martha McManus If you have more questions: marthamcm@hotmail.com
