Senators put their party differences aside during Tuesday's meeting to honor Thomas Maresco, a UF alumnus who was killed Sept. 3 in Lesotho, Africa.
Maresco was an alumnus of Sigma Chi Fraternity and was serving in the Peace Corps when he was killed.
The Senate observed a moment of silence in memory of Maresco, and commended his passion and bravery.
"It's a horrible thing, what happened, and we offer our deepest condolences to [Maresco's] family and the brothers of Sigma Chi, said Senate president Kara Olesky, who represents the Unite Party.
"He is a role model to many people."
The resolution will be sent to Maresco's family in attempt to express the condolences of the UF student body.
Additionally, senators unanimously passed a bill providing $890 to the One Campaign, devoted to spreading among students awareness of world poverty issues and awareness about diseases.

| Big Omission in Comprehensive Report The Peace Corps has always neglected the third goal, allocating less than 1% of their resources to it, so when Aaron Williams promised Senator Dodd to provide a "Comprehensive Assessment Report" with ideas to strengthen and reform the agency's operations we expected to see some forceful recommendations to address this critical weakness. Read the report and our commentary on the big omission in the third goal that committee members didn't address, discuss, or even mention. |
| Memo to Incoming Director Williams PCOL has asked five prominent RPCVs and Staff to write a memo on the most important issues facing the Peace Corps today. Issues raised include the independence of the Peace Corps, political appointments at the agency, revitalizing the five-year rule, lowering the ET rate, empowering volunteers, removing financial barriers to service, increasing the agency's budget, reducing costs, and making the Peace Corps bureaucracy more efficient and responsive.
