PCV Miki Kim works in HIV/AIDS education in Belize

The San Pedro AIDS Commission, the local branch of the National AIDS Commission, is happy to report they can count on the help of Miss Miki Kim to assist with HIV/AIDS educational awareness. Miki, a Peace Corps volunteer from the US brings to this island a wealth of information and ideas to help disseminate valuable information about this worldwide epidemic.

Miki was born in Korea but moved to California, USA when she was eleven years old. She holds a degree in psychology from the University of California in Santa Cruz. Prior to joining the Peace Corps organization, Miki worked for six months with the Korean-American Community Center, a non-profit organization that promotes leadership among Korean-American youths. She also worked with children with behavior and/or emotional disorders. Miki joined the Peace Corps organization because she always felt privileged living in the US and wanted to give back to those less fortunate. Although she had always devoted time to community service, she felt that joining the Peace Corps would be the ultimate way of providing community service.

After her application and qualifications were reviewed, Peace Corps suggested she work with HIV/AIDS education in Belize. So, last June, Miki made her way to Belize and spent six weeks traveling around the country undergoing a process of technical and cultural training. She was then sent to Guatemala for a six-week "crash" course in Spanish language.

During her two-year stay in "La Isla Bonita," Miki will work with the San Pedro Branch of the National AIDS Commission planning functions and educational campaigns, among other things.

When asked about her impression of San Pedro, an ecstatic Miki told The San Pedro Sun, "I love this place. I feel so lucky to be here and even a little guilty that I am so lucky. The people are great and very friendly. I look forward to working with the San Pedro AIDS Commission and the people of the island."

The San Pedro Sun joins the AIDS Commission and the community in welcoming Miki Kim to our "Isla Bonita."
