Peace Corps Reaches Out to Former Volunteers

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 26, 2003 -- Peace Corps Director Gaddi H. Vasquez announced the publication of Peace Corps’ new newsletter for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCV), the RPCV Update. Over 100,000 RPCVs were sent the Update to help them keep in touch with Peace Corps.

The inaugural issue of the Update includes a message from Director Vasquez to former volunteers on the expanding efforts of the Peace Corps. Other articles highlight Peace Corps news items and notable RPCVs.

The Update will soon be made available on the Peace Corps website. By communicating with RPCVs online the Peace Corps will be taking another step towards reaching the fourth point of President Bush’s Management Agenda, which calls on agencies to “expand electronic government.”

If your are a returned Peace Corps volunteer and would like to receive an electronic version of the newsletter in the future, you can update your contact information by e-mailing rpcvupdate@peacecorps.gov.

Since 1961, more than 168,000 volunteers have served in the Peace Corps, working in such diverse fields as education, health, HIV/AIDS education and awareness, information technology, business development, the environment, and agriculture. Peace Corps volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. Peace Corps service is a two-year commitment.

With my husband, Waldo, I served two years (1967-69) in the Peace Corps on Tol Isand in Truk in Micronesia. As a childrens' book author, my most recent picturebook, THE BIGGEST SOAP, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2004,is a story drawn from my experience while on Tol. The book has so far been well received with a starred review from Booklist. The illustrator is Stacey Dressen McQueen. I thought other returned volunteers would like to know about this book. I'm hoping this is the right source to contact for getting the information out.
