President of Bulgaria Praises Peace Corps' Work to Director Vasquez

He spoke with Peace Corps Director Gaddi Vasquez on Friday at a meeting also attended by U.S. Ambassador to Sofia James Pardew. This is the Director's sixth trip overseas since he was sworn in one year ago. He previously traveled to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China in March; accompanied President Bush on his trip to Peru in March; traveled to Mauritania, Senegal and Morocco in June; Jamaica and the Dominican Republic in August, and to Armenia and Jordan in December. President Praises Peace Corps' Work in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's President Parvanov voiced his satisfaction with the assistance that the U.S. Peace Corps volunteers have offered in the field of Bulgarian education, regional development and environmental protection. He spoke with Peace Corps Director Gaddi Vasquez on Friday at a meeting also attended by U.S. Ambassador to Sofia James Pardew.
The president showed interest in the Peace Corps aid program targeted at underprivileged children in Bulgaria. He said that the work of the U.S. volunteers in the country could be seen as part of Sofia's strategic partnership with the United States. President Parvanov also highlighted the importance of the 100th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries that, in his words, should give a push to the bilateral cooperation in all fields. He added that Bulgaria's economy now needs more attention from U.S. business.
According to Vasquez, the Peace Corps volunteers in Bulgaria will boost their work in the fields of education and training, high technologies and small and medium-sized business. Click on a link below for more stories on PCOL
