Kennedy clan back on old stomping ground

Fancy cars. Cash-carrying Democrats. A famous writer. Beautiful people. Gilded surroundings.

Why, the Kennedys are back!

For one night only.

Several of the clan's icons returned to Palm Beach society in style Wednesday night at Anthony Shriver's fund-raising gala for the charity he founded as a student at Georgetown 19 years ago, Best Buddies International, which pairs disabled and disadvantaged kids with mentors.

It was Miami Beach resident Shriver's first fund-raiser in 10 years in a place once associated more closely with the Kennedy name.

"This fund-raiser used to be at the home of my grandmother (Rose Kennedy, on North Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach)," Shriver said, as guests trickled into the Flagler Museum for the dinner. "But the family sold it, so I moved everything to Miami Beach. I still have a lot of memories and friends in Palm Beach. I used to play football on a field down the street.

"This is our first year back in a decade and we're sold out. We should be able to make $500,000 tonight. It's not what we used to make, but we're on the way."

Among the 350-plus who dug into smoked salmon and frozen pears: Shriver's parents, Special Olympics founders Eunice and Sargent Shriver; the author of Bright Lights, Big City, Jay McInerney; polo star and Ralph Lauren model Nacho Figueras; heavy-duty Democratic Party donors Michelle and Howard Kessler; and George Cloutier with fiancée Tiffany Spadora. Among local society stalwarts: Lois Pope, with prodigal son Paul; and Veronica Atkins, widow of diet guru Robert Atkins, with new hubby Alexis Mersentes. The 92-year-old Shriver patriarch was seen cutting a rug to the riffs of Gloria Gaynor, live and in person.

Anthony, meanwhile, told Page Two he expects anything but peace and quiet on Easter weekend at his $4.7 million canal-front mansion in Miami Beach.

"My parents are there. My sister (Maria Shriver) is coming with her kids. There are going to be 14 of us."

Excuse me? Didn't you forget someone?

"Yep, he's coming, too," Shriver said of California Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria's husband.

Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act Date: October 27 2007 No: 1206 Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act
Senator Chris Dodd vowed to filibuster the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that helped this administration violate the civil liberties of Americans. "It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them."

What is Wrong at the US Embassy in Bolivia? Date: February 10 2008 No: 1227 What is Wrong at the US Embassy in Bolivia?
Last summer Peace Corps Inspector General David Kotz cited the lack of cooperation from the US embassy in Bolivia in the search for missing Peace Corps Volunteer Walter Poirier III. Now a member of the US Embassy Staff in Bolivia is accused of asking Peace Corps Volunteers "to basically spy" on Cubans and Venezuelans in the country. Could US Ambassador Philip S.Goldberg please explain what is going on at the embassy that he has been running in La Paz since 2006?
