Bobby Shriver won't run for attorney general

Shriver, in a prepared statement released Thursday, said that despite "numerous, exciting conversations about a campaign … 2010 is not the year for me to seek this incredible statewide office." The 54-year-old Democrat and Santa Monica City Council member is a member of one of the nation's best-known political families: the Kennedy clan. His father is Sargent Shriver, the 1972 Democratic candidate for vice president. His uncles included a former president, U.S. attorney general and U.S. senators. Sargent Shriver was the Founding director of the Peace Corps.

Bobby Shriver, whose political pedigree includes being the nephew of President John F. Kennedy and brother-in-law of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, has decided against running for California attorney general in 2010.

Shriver, in a prepared statement released Thursday, said that despite "numerous, exciting conversations about a campaign … 2010 is not the year for me to seek this incredible statewide office."

The 54-year-old Democrat and Santa Monica City Council member is a member of one of the nation's best-known political families: the Kennedy clan.

His father is Sargent Shriver, the 1972 Democratic candidate for vice president. His uncles included a former president, U.S. attorney general and U.S. senators.

The Bee reported last month that Shriver was eyeing the attorney general's race. His departure from a field he never officially entered leaves San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo and a trio of Assembly Democrats – Ted Lieu, Alberto Torrico and Pedro Nava – in the Democratic field.

Republican Sen. Tom Harman is also exploring a run.

Incumbent Attorney General Jerry Brown is widely expected to run for governor.

Shriver cited the birth of his daughter in January and the "health challenges" of his parents in walking away from the campaign.

"Every time I look at her, I cannot bear the thought of spending the next 15 months on the campaign trail away from her," he said of his daughter, Rosemary.

PCOL's Candidate for Peace Corps Director Date: December 2 2008 No: 1288 PCOL's Candidate for Peace Corps Director
Honduras RPCV Jon Carson, 33, presided over thousands of workers as national field director for the Obama campaign and said the biggest challenge -- and surprise -- was the volume of volunteer help, including more than 15,000 "super volunteers," who were a big part of what made Obama's campaign so successful. PCOL endorses Jon Carson as the man who can revitalize the Peace Corps, bring it into the internet age, and meet Obama's goal of doubling the size of the Peace Corps by 2011.
