Wis. governor: Returning soldiers should be treated fairly by auto insurers

MILWAUKEE — Gov. Jim Doyle has urged auto insurers to treat soldiers fairly when they return home to Wisconsin after being stationed overseas.
“When these brave men and women return home, this is one hassle they should not have to deal with,” he said in a statement Wednesday in the wake of some problems elsewhere in the country.
Doyle commented as he directed the state insurance commissioner’s office to issue a bulletin encouraging insurance companies to treat returning soldiers as if they had continuous coverage as long as the policy holders were in good standing when they left on active duty.
There have been no reported cases of Wisconsin soldiers facing higher rates or being denied coverage, but it is happening elsewhere, said Eileen Mallow, the office’s assistant deputy commissioner.
Eric Englund, president of the Wisconsin Insurance Alliance, said there are more than 200 insurers authorized to issue auto polices in Wisconsin.
“My sense is that the insurance industry has been and continues to be respectful of the extraordinary needs of our men and women in service,” Englund said.
There is no state law barring insurance companies from charging higher rates to soldiers who dropped their coverage while deployed overseas.
