MADISON, Wis. - Gov. Jim Doyle, who is considering two black judges and a white judge for appointment to the Wisconsin Supreme Court, says it would be a "good thing" if the first black was named to the panel.
Doyle told reporters Monday that Milwaukee County Circuit Judges Louis Butler and Maxine White and Dane County Circuit Court Judge Angela Bartell are all outstanding candidates who would be great justices.
But when asked whether it was time for the court's first black justice, the governor added, "I believe that diversity is a good thing, and it's a good thing for our government institutions. It would be a good thing for the court."
Butler and White are black and Bartell is white.
Doyle also said he was aware that the resignation of former Justice Diane Sykes to become a member of the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals left no one from Milwaukee County on the state Supreme Court.
The governor said he plans to make the appointment soon.
