Bolivia RPCV J.W. Lown announces his bid for mayor of San Angelo

Mayoral perspective

J.W. Lown officially an-nounced his bid for mayor of San Angelo Saturday morning, unveiling his campaign slogan, ''A Fresh Perspective for all San Angelo.''

True to his slogan, the rather large crowd that showed up on Celebration Bridge was made up of young and old, whites, blacks and Hispanics.

''I believe we are ready for a different kind of leadership,'' Lown said. ''A kind of leadership that will center on making us greater together than we will ever be separated into a segmented society.''

A main plank in Lown's platform is ''community building'' through public service.

Lown has an extensive background in public service working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bolivia and various other nonprofit organizations.

Lown, who had a business degree from Principia College, has experience in real estate, property management and entrepreneurship. His platform promises to use that experience to ''promote a favorable business environment'' by supporting ''city and community leaders who are constantly looking to attract new businesses and enhance local businesses.''

His platform also consists of water conservation and guarding against the squandering of taxpayers' dollars.

He also stresses that, if elected, he will be able to commit all of his time to being mayor since he is self-employed. One of his campaign flyers declares, ''San Angelo needs a full-time mayor.''

Campaign treasurer Greg Gossett introduced Lown as someone who would ''think outside the box.''

Gossett also said that although Lown is only 26 years old, he has done a lot of living in that relatively short amount of time, citing his volunteer service and the experience he had gained while working in various political internships.

The Rev. Nathaniel ''Hank'' Hankins provided the invocation for the gathering.
