HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 2004--Career Education Corporation (NASDAQ: CECO) has named Robert M. McNamara Jr. to the newly-created position of senior vice president of compliance. In this role, he will be responsible for all compliance matters related to accreditation, federal student financial aid and state regulatory requirements.
"During his long and illustrious legal career in public service and the private sector, Mr. McNamara has dealt extensively with compliance issues," said John M. Larson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Career Education. "The unique combination of knowledge and experience that he brings to his new responsibilities makes him the ideal choice to direct the compliance efforts of CEC and our schools."
McNamara joins CEC from the Washington, D.C. law firm of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, where he was a partner. He also served as managing director of Manatt Jones Global Strategies, the firm's international business consulting subsidiary.
Previously, he was general counsel to the Central Intelligence Agency. As the Agency's chief legal officer, he ensured that the CIA complied with United States and international law in providing foreign intelligence to the President, the National Security Council and other senior government officials executing national security policy.
Before joining the CIA, McNamara served as assistant general counsel for enforcement at the Department of the Treasury where he supervised lawyers assigned to the U.S. Customs Service, the Secret Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Financial Crime Enforcement Network. At the Treasury, he specialized in financial institution fraud and international money-laundering issues, and represented the Department and senior Treasury officials during numerous congressional inquiries.
Earlier, McNamara was deputy director of enforcement at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, general counsel of the Peace Corps, legislative counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, assistant U.S. attorney and assistant majority counsel of the U.S. Senate Watergate Committee. In addition, he was an adjunct professor of law at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he taught trial practice for 12 years. He holds a B.A. degree from Mount Carmel College, an A.B. degree from John Carroll University and a J.D. degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
Mr. McNamara is a former member of the board of directors of the Career College Association and a former member of its Legislative Advisory Council. He also is a member of the Homeland Security Information Policy Board that was recently established by Secretary Tom Ridge. In addition, he lectures and writes extensively on a wide range of issues including national security, privacy and civil liberties.
