Malaysia and Ecuador RPCV Julia Haskins Wheeler dies at 90

Julia Haskins Wheeler

Julia Haskins Wheeler, 90, of Wakeman, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at her home. Born in Hillsdale, Mich., she graduated from Michigan State University in 1936. She worked in food service at Baldwin-Wallace College when she met her late husband, David. She lived in Wakeman since 1945 and taught elementary school in Wakeman for 10 years. She hosted an exchange student from Iceland in 1962 and another exchange student from Sweden in 1963.

When she was 56 years old, she joined the Peace Corps and served in elementary teacher training in Borneo for two years. When she returned home, she worked with the YWCA programs in Medina and Coshocton. After retiring, she again joined the Peace Corps at age 72 and served two years in Ecuador.

She traveled widely, visiting family and friends throughout the world. Active in the Wakeman community, she taught Sunday school at Wakeman Congregational United Church of Christ and helped create the church’s Missions Committee. She supported the Firelands Habitat for Humanity Chapter and worked with the Wakeman Caring Community. Survivors include her three children Helen, Tom and Ruth, and two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, David; her parents; and seven siblings. A memorial service will follow 11:30 a.m. Sunday worship services Sept. 5 at Wakeman Congregational United Church of Christ, 14 Abbott St., Wakeman. Memorials may be made to the Wakeman Congregational United Church of Christ Access Fund, 14 Abbott St., Wakeman 44889 or Firelands Habitat for Humanity, 365 Main St., Huron 44839. Morman Funeral Home in Wakeman is handling local arrangements.
