Dodd and Lieberman Appointed to Senate Working Group Evaluating 9/11 Commission Proposals

Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman were appointed on Tuesday to a bipartisan Senate working group that will examine how to best implement the 9/11 Commission's recommendations regarding the Senate's oversight of intelligence and homeland security matters. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) identified which colleagues would participate in the working group and announced that it will being its work immediately and present its findings and recommendations to Senate leadership as expeditiously as possible.

"The Commission has done our nation a great service by not only trying to find out what happened on 9/11 and why, but by proposing ways to prevent such heinous acts from happening again," Dodd said. "It is now our job in the Senate to give full and serious consideration to the recommendations concerning Congressional oversight of intelligence and homeland security so that we can help to keep our people safe and free."

"As we set about the work of reorganizing the flawed intelligence apparatus in the Executive Branch, we must not ignore the equally vital work of ensuring that our own intelligence and homeland security oversight will allow for an effective partnership in defense of our homeland security," Lieberman said.

Following the release of the 9/11 Commission report, Senators Frist and Daschle called for the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, in close consultation with other relevant Senate committees, to evaluate the Commission's proposals for Executive Branch reorganization. At that time, Senators Frist and Daschle also announced that a bipartisan task force would take up the issues of Senate oversight reform called in for section 13.4 of the Commission's report.
