Kate's mother is back from a visit to Washington, D.C., where she spoke before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. There, she says she tried to be Kate's voice, telling lawmakers that her daughter was given no training in how to deal with such problems, and that the confidentiality of her email was breached, putting her in danger.

ATLANTA, Ga. - The mother of Kate Puzey, a volunteer who was murdered, accuses the United States Peace Crops of doing little to protect her daughter. More than two years after her death, her family finally received an apology.
Family members call Puzey a beacon of light. The 24 year old chose to help people through the Peace Corps, serving two years as an English teacher in the West African nation of Benin. On March 11, 2009, she was killed.
Lois Puzey says Kate believed several of her students had been sexually abused by a local Peace Corps employee. She complained by email to Peace Corps managers, and within days of that report, she was killed. The man she complained about is now being held as the prime suspect in her murder.
Puzey says after the crime, the Peace Corps reacted insensitively, sharing little information as her family tried to find out what happened. Her account, along with stories from volunteers who were raped, prompted Peace Corps director Aaron Williams to apologize for neglecting what he called his agency's top priority-the safety of its volunteers.
Now that they have support in the House, the family is seeking support from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. They hope to see legislation enacted soon that will ensure future volunteers can serve safely.

| Peace Corps: The Next Fifty Years As we move into the Peace Corps' second fifty years, what single improvement would most benefit the mission of the Peace Corps? Read our op-ed about the creation of a private charitable non-profit corporation, independent of the US government, whose focus would be to provide support and funding for third goal activities. Returned Volunteers need President Obama to support the enabling legislation, already written and vetted, to create the Peace Corps Foundation. RPCVs will do the rest. |
| How Volunteers Remember Sarge As the Peace Corps' Founding Director Sargent Shriver laid the foundations for the most lasting accomplishment of the Kennedy presidency. Shriver spoke to returned volunteers at the Peace Vigil at Lincoln Memorial in September, 2001 for the Peace Corps 40th. "The challenge I believe is simple - simple to express but difficult to fulfill. That challenge is expressed in these words: PCV's - stay as you are. Be servants of peace. Work at home as you have worked abroad. Humbly, persistently, intelligently. Weep with those who are sorrowful, Care for those who are sick. Serve your wives, serve your husbands, serve your families, serve your neighbors, serve your cities, serve the poor, join others who also serve," said Shriver. "Serve, Serve, Serve. That's the answer, that's the objective, that's the challenge." |
