Bush's turn to deliver
WASHINGTON -- Ohio delivered the presidency for George W. Bush. So what's George Bush going to do for Ohio?
Politicians often reward their supporters by slipping them lucrative government contracts or doling out big bucks for pet projects. And if Bush owes anybody anything, it's the people of Ohio, without whom he'd be on a plane headed back to Texas instead of hanging out for another four years in the White House.
[Excerpt]
The speculation has already started about who will stay and who will go in President Bush's cabinet during his second term. Reportedly on the way out: Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and Attorney General John Ashcroft.
But what about Labor Secretary Elaine Chao? The buzz in Washington is that the Louisville resident and the wife of Senate Republican Whip Mitch McConnell is lobbying to become transportation secretary during the second Bush term.
"That's not true," Chao said at a post-election Republican victory bash in Hebron on Tuesday.
True or not, it makes sense. Chao served as deputy secretary of transportation in the administration of George H.W. Bush and was in line to become transportation secretary during the current president's first term. That job instead went to Norman Mineta, who served as commerce secretary in the Clinton administration.
Chao ended up instead in the Labor Department -- nothing to scoff at, but hardly the most powerful or prestigious job in Washington.
If she has any idea whether she's staying put, changing jobs or leaving the administration, she isn't saying.
"I think that is up to the president," she said. "I enjoy doing my job very much."
