Syracuse native killed in attack in Ivory Coast

SYRACUSE, N.Y. A humanitarian aid worker from Syracuse was killed along with nine French soldiers in an attack by Ivory Coast warplanes on Saturday.
Forty-nine-year-old Robert Carsky grew up in Syracuse and spent most of his adult life working in West Africa as a soil scientist and crop researcher. He was providing humanitarian aid in the Ivory Coast when he was struck down by warplanes launching a surprise airstrike.

His father, Doctor Edward Carsky, said Robert Carsky devoted his whole life to helping people in underdeveloped areas.

Carsky went to Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse and Colgate University, then joined the Peace Corps. He returned to get a P-H-D from Cornell University, then went back overseas with his wife. They lived in Brazil, Nigeria, and other countries, and were in the process of moving back to the United States when Carsky was killed.
