Nepal RPCV Sara Keinath named Wexford County 4-H youth educator



Keinath comes to MSU Extension after serving as a forestry technician and wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service in California’s Inyo National Forest since 2004. She also served as a community forest extensionist for the U.S. Peace Corps in Nepal from 2001 to 2003. “I bring a spirit of adventure,” Keinath says. “I’ve gathered so many skills from my various jobs and experiences, such as how to work with different groups of people and community groups, and helping to bring people together.” After years of working away from Michigan, Keinath has returned to her home state to work with volunteers and leaders of regional 4-H organizations to help develop and educate youth community groups. “I’m really excited to come home, be close to my family and work with an organization that I started out with so many years ago,” Keinath says.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State University (MSU) Extension has named Sara Keinath Wexford County 4-H youth educator, effective June 1.

“I am truly excited about welcoming Sara to our Extension team,” says Patrick Cudney, MSU Extension north region director. “She brings a wide range of valuable skills to the organization and 4-H, and she has a great enthusiasm for working with young people and volunteers. She was also in 4-H as a child and has a broad background and level of confidence and experience that will be tremendous assets to the program.”

Keinath comes to MSU Extension after serving as a forestry technician and wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service in California’s Inyo National Forest since 2004. She also served as a community forest extensionist for the U.S. Peace Corps in Nepal from 2001 to 2003.

After years of working away from Michigan, Keinath has returned to her home state to work with volunteers and leaders of regional 4-H organizations to help develop and educate youth community groups.

“I’m really excited to come home, be close to my family and work with an organization that I started out with so many years ago,” Keinath says.

A Tuscola County 4-H alumna, Keinath hopes to inspire future students to explore and keep pushing themselves toward success.

“My background in 4-H gave me a strong foundation in leadership and work ethic, and I’m really excited to be able to give back,” Keinath says. “I’d love to inspire this sense of adventure in the kids to open doors and do what they want in life and show them that nothing is out of reach.”

Keinath obtained her bachelor’s degree in biology from Alma College in 1999 and her master’s degree in forestry from Michigan Technological University in 2004.

“This is going to be a good fit for me; a really good partnership,” Keinath says. “It will be fun.”

Senator Dodd's Peace Corps Hearings Read PCOL's executive summary of Senator Chris Dodd's hearings on July 25 on the Peace Corps Volunteer Empowerment Act and why Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter does not believe the bill would contribute to an improved Peace Corps while four other RPCV witnesses do. Ambassador revokes clearance for PC Director A post made on PCOL from volunteers in Tanzania alleges that Ambassador Retzer has acted improperly in revoking the country clearance of Country Director Christine Djondo. A statement from Peace Corps' Press Office says that the Peace Corps strongly disagrees with the ambassador’s decision. On June 8 the White House announced that Retzer is being replaced as Ambassador. Latest: Senator Dodd has placed a hold on Mark Green's nomination to be Ambassador to Tanzania.

Suspect confesses in murder of PCV Search parties in the Philippines discovered the body of Peace Corps Volunteer Julia Campbell near Barangay Batad, Banaue town on April 17. Director Tschetter expressed his sorrow at learning the news. “Julia was a proud member of the Peace Corps family, and she contributed greatly to the lives of Filipino citizens in Donsol, Sorsogon, where she served,” he said. He served with honor One year ago, Staff Sgt. Robert J. Paul (RPCV Kenya) carried on an ongoing dialog on this website on the military and the peace corps and his role as a member of a Civil Affairs Team in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have just received a report that Sargeant Paul has been killed by a car bomb in Kabul. Words cannot express our feeling of loss for this tremendous injury to the entire RPCV community. Most of us didn't know him personally but we knew him from his words. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. He was one of ours and he served with honor.
