U.S. amends travel warning for Kenya

NAIROBI: The United States has amended its travel advisory cautioning citizens against going to parts of Kenya, saying threats of violence have receded dramatically following the country's power-sharing deal.
Kenya's deeply flawed presidential election on Dec. 27 unleashed weeks of violence that killed more than 1,000 people and tarnished the reputation of a country once seen as among the most stable and tourist-friendly in Africa.
"Threats of political demonstrations and violence have dramatically receded following the widely accepted power-sharing agreement signed on February 28," the State Department said in a statement Friday.
The temporary suspension of the Peace Corps program in Kenya also was under review.
An advisory in February had warned American citizens against travel to several provinces but the latest recommended only that "private American citizens in Kenya and those considering travel to Kenya evaluate their personal security situation in light of continuing, potential threats from terrorism and crime."
President Mwai Kibaki and the opposition leader Raila Odinga both claimed victory in the presidential election, which observers said was so flawed by rigging that it was impossible to say who had won. After weeks of bloodshed and mounting international pressure, the men agreed to share power, with Odinga to fill a newly created post of prime minister.
The leaders now must try to heal a divided nation, as well as restore one of Africa's most promising economies. Kenya, one of the most tourist-friendly countries in Africa, has seen up to $1 billion in losses linked to the turmoil.
Kenyan leaders have denounced travel warnings from Britain and the United States, saying they were deterring tourists.

| Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act Senator Chris Dodd vowed to filibuster the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that helped this administration violate the civil liberties of Americans. "It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
