St. Francis High School in Wheaton recently dedicated a peace garden to one of its alumni. A plaque was placed in honor of Blythe O’Sullivan, a 2000 graduate from Bloomingdale who was killed in December in Suriname, where she was serving inthe Peace Corps. She apparently tripped a gun-equipped animal trap. “We thought it would be a good time to dedicate a special plaque, because she was working for peace,” said Jessica Buchholz Stielow, alumni director.

O’Sullivan, 25, was stationed in rural Suriname, where she was assigned toassist in the development of a community center, improve water quality andhelp women create sustainable incomes.
She graduated from Bradley University in 2004 with a marketing degree andentered the workforce. But she felt the call to serve others and joined thePeace Corps in 2006.
In her MySpace blog, O’Sullivan wrote about her ambitions: “I love helping others, and I believe in helping others because I was given so much.”
The garden features a rock wall and grasses, flowers and bushes.
“It also can be used as an outdoor classroom,” Buchholz Stielow said.
The garden also honors alumni who are veterans of the military, she said.
“She was just so full of life,” Buchholz Stielow said of O’Sullivan. “Shewas always smiling, upbeat, optimistic and smart.”
