A San Fernando Valley teacher and charter school took top honors at the annual California Charter Schools Conference, held Thursday in Long Beach.
Christina Hoppe of Granada Hills Charter High School was named Teacher of the Year, while Our Community School in North Hills was recognized as School of the Year.
Caprice Young, the former CEO of the California Charter Schools Association, received the leadership award for her work while head of the charter association. She left the organization in August and now works for Knowledge Universe, a Santa Monica-based company founded by financier-turned-philanthropist Michael Milken and his brother, Lowell.
Hoppe called the award a surprise, explaining that a teacher's focus is on her students' achievement, not her own.
Along with colleagues Celia Ashley and Reena Mistry, Hoppe created the school's Global History of Ideas Program in which students are taught classical, Western philosophy in 10-week intervals. The award-winning course is credited as the school's strongest writing program.
The three teachers led a conference panel on teacher leadership Wednesday.
Hoppe began teaching in 1995 as a Peace Corps volunteer in Micronesia. The following year, she joined the Los Angeles Unified School District as a teacher at San Fernando High School and later went on to Granada Hills High School before it converted to a charter school.
"I felt this was an opportunity to take control of the vision and resources," Hoppe said. "It was an opportunity for real educational reform in the hands of those at the school site."
Asked for advice for other charter school teachers, Hoppe said staff will have to become creative in fundraising and should consider community partnerships and even corporate sponsorships.
"We're going to have to get creative in the next couple years to maintain the integrity of the instructional programs," Hoppe said.
