There are numerous ways Emilio Torres can honor his deceased wife Amy Sosnowski.
You can be sure he's done many of them since she died in 2005 of malaria while the couple was working with the Ministry of Sports Development in Mozambique.
But on Sunday Torres officially added another that Sosnowski's spirit is likely smiling upon when he was named the new head volleyball coach at Bishop Noll at the school's sports banquet.
Sosnowski graduated from Noll in 1995.
Torres brings a wealth of volleyball experience to the Warriors. He's been an assistant at Thornton Fractional South in Illinois, head coach at Cabrini College in Pennsylvania, helped begin the Mozambique women's national team, played the sport for the Puerto Rican Junior National Team. He also coaches the Diamond Elite Volleyball Academy 17s team that includes Northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois players.
Out of all those stops, though, he might remember Cabrini College the most, though it's hard to judge. And he compares the atmosphere at Noll to that experience.
"It's a small school, small program and has a real good support system from the parents," Torres said. "While coaching club, I've dealt with parents a lot. I feel very welcome by the parents and coaches on Sunday."
He added that he "doesn't like big schools" and that 2A Noll is just the right size for him.
Torres also has plenty of life experiences to pass on to his players, including a stint in the Peace Corps in West Africa.
