The project I was assigned to was sponsored by the Irish government; consequently, my supervisor was a jolly, friendly man named John Judge, and the small Hololo Valley school science teacher was a young Irish woman name Ashling Fitzmaurice. There were three of us: American, two Irish and Leif, a Dane. We all got along well, but those two Irish (not volunteers) were a joy. We always got together in the evening after our work was done, often to share our food and eat together, drink and sing (and learn) some Irish songs. My supervisor had some "old" tapes of Irish songs. I couldn't understand a word of that dialect, but their friendship, their help, encouragement was priceless. Most of all, their jokes, stories, laughs and their good hearts are what I remember most.

I've loved the Irish people since I served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Lesotho, S.A.
Sen. Ted Kennedy reminds me of my Peace Corps days' Irish friends. His passion and public service for the American people will live on.
God bless Teddy Kennedy, and long live the Irish people.
