US says it peace corps will return here
Friday, 20 November 2009
THE United States Peace Corps programme is expected to be re-introduced here in two to three years time, US envoy to Solomon Islands Teddy Taylor says.
Mr Taylor said they are working in tangent with the Government to get the Peace Corps volunteers back.
"We have to budget for them and US government agencies in Washington are beginning to prepare for the 2011 budget cycles submissions, so it could be two to three years before we see the Peace Corps back," he said.
The new ambassador, who is based in Papua New Guinea, confirmed that the peace corp director has responded to Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua's request for the return of the US peace corp.
"I delivered a letter from the director of the Peace Corps in response to the letter written by the Prime Minister," Mr Taylor said.
It is not known what exactly was the response that was delivered to the Prime Minister Dr Derick Sikua in the letter.
He said it is a long process and it will take a while.
Mr Taylor said the process entails visits by the Peace Corps to determine the feasibility of their return.
"They have to come in and conduct an assessment on where to go, what to do and how many to start with."
He said the decision for them to come back has not been made but they are working very hard and for the return of the Peace Corps.
The Peace Corps programme was brought to an end at the height to the civil unrest in 2001.
