Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
Married an American I met while in Peace Corps; we've lived in Tunisia another year, Saudi Arabia 3 years, Italy 3 years and now live in Portland, Oregon. Do literary research at present.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
Truly some of the best days of my life. A profound experience which has led me to continue working with those who are underprivleged and in need. Currently on board for shelter for abandoned and abused teenagers. My best friends in the world are 5 RPCVs with whom I have remained in close, personal contact. Peace Corps gave me a global view...I care about what happens to all people and want to DO something, not just therorize.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
Anyone with whom I served
Any message for returned volunteers?:
There are few things I am more proud of than being a returned Peace Corps Volunteer.

In a nutshell....I have been living back in the Mile High City of Denver
since returning....I recruited for Peace Corps for 5 years out of the
Denver recruitment office and I am currently working as a corporate
recruiter for a personnel firm in Boulder. I have been married for 4
years to my wife Jennifer who I met while she was interning at the
Peace Corps Office. My wife is an English Teacher in an inner city High
School in Denver. We have no kids other than myself and our 27 pound
French Bulldog / Pug mix named Smidgen.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
Greatest job I have had....and luckily I have a couple of Tunisian friends
from Jendouba now living in Denver so....10 years later I still get to
speak some Bilarbi and talk about the "good ol' times" in PC.

You on your own when it comes to the cereal isle in the Grocery

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
Lived and worked for a brief period of time back in Houston. In 1977-1980,
worked for Department of Army in Texarkana, Texas and Charlottesville,
Virginia as a Personnel intern. Gave that up to marry Wayne Bloxom and
become full-time stay-at-home mom in December 1980, in Hooks, Texas.
Served in that capacity for 20 years and four children, ranging in age from
21 to 13. Last year my six-year volunteer position turned into a part-time
job at the local library.

Returned in 96, then went to work for an IT consulting firm (from no power

night.

Bring us up to date on your life after the peace corps:
I Left Tunisia on a bicycle, and rode across Tunisia, Algeria and Morrocco and finally quit at the end of the road in the Draa Valley. I Arrived back home and had a hard time adjusting to life back here, but did. Married my college sweetheart, found a job in a small architectural firm, which lasted a short time, found several other short term architectural jobs, and finally found myself out on my own which i have been doing for almost 30 yrs now. During which time I managed to accumulate some rental properties and have become a landlord too. We are the proud parents of 3 kids, all of which have grown and moved away. The years with the kids were very fulfilling and very difficult at times. however, i am glad they came along. So things are very quiet now and i am wondering what my next adventure in life will be. I recently bought a BMW motorcycle, and am thinking of cruising the highways and byways of America and maybe, the world.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
i have to admit, Tunisia opened my eyes to the rest of the world. Not only was the Tunisia Culture totally different from mine, but all the other wonderful cultures around the Mediterran sea, were very educational to me. I took home far more then I gave. Because of the opportunities to travel to other foreign countries, I have a greater appreciation for the rest of the world then I did before the Peace Corps days.
Anyone you are looking for or would like to hear from?:
I would like to hear from or about Rich Storke, who was my program director in Tunisia.

By louisekaegi@yahoo.com (193.95.49.214) on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 5:35 pm: Edit Post |
Please add my name to the roster. I was Louise Mullikin, PCV in Sousse, Tunisia, 1964-66, then worked for the Peace Corps in Washington in the Occe of Volunteer Support, June 1967-69.
I am now living in Tunisia, thanks to the Fullbright-Hayes my historian husband Walter Kaegi received. He is an historian at the University of Chicaqo and Oriental Institute, with a specialty in Byzantine history and early Islamic studies.
We will be in Tunisia (living in Salammbo-Carthage) until December 1, then go to Morocco for two months, then go to Algeria for three months (mainly Constantine), returning to Tunisia to our apartment in Salammbo until September 2005.
This is my fifth visit to Tunisia. I visited Walter when he was here the summers of 1996 and 1997. Walter is writing a book on the Byzantine-Islamic encounter and the spread of Islam across North Africa in the 7th Century. He teaches a North Africa course at the University of Chicago.
My love for this country comes back in a warm rush every time I come here. I brought editing work with me (my specialties have included health care, cultural competence, and bioethics). On a personal (and interpersonal) level, I'm interested in improving understanding and removing stereotypes about Islam and in boosting the "house of Abraham" concept of the similarities and shared values of the big monotheistic threesome.
Would love to hear from PCVs, visitors to Tunisia, and of course any Tunisians wired to this.
I can be reached at louisekaegi@yahoo.com or as follows through CEMAT:
Louise and Walter Kaegi, CEMAT (Centre d'Etudes Maghrebbines a Tunis) B.P. 404, 1049 Tunis-Hached, Tunisia

Any RPCVs interested in a short-term volunteer opportunity in Jordan? The America's Unofficial Ambassadors (AUA) program at Creative Learning is dedicated to expanding and supporting private American citizens' service in the Muslim World. From January 6-15 2012, AUA will lead a group of volunteers to Jordan to support local community development initiatives, learn about Jordanian culture, and meet face-to-face with Jordanian families and university students. Volunteers will spend 4 days working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for poor families in the north of the country. They will also engage in discussion with civil society groups in Amman and Irbid to learn more about Jordanian culture, share insight into American culture, and discuss challenges common to both societies. The Building Peace by Building Homes trip to Jordan will end with visits to Petra (one of the modern 7 Wonders of the World) and the Dead Sea.
The trip is the first in a series of three Building Peace by Building Homes trips that CL will lead in 2012 [Additional trips to Tajikistan (May) and Indonesia (July) are still being planned]. For more information visit: http://unofficialambassadors.com/get-involved/buil ding-peace-by-building-homes/, or contact AUA trip leader, Andrew Stinson, at AndrewS@creativelearning.org.
