LOS ANGELES - The Curse of the Bambino wasn't the only thing that was shattered during the Boston Red Sox's championship run.

Maria Shriver broke her foot.

California's first lady, a faithful Red Sox fan, was hobbling on crutches after injuring herself while watching the fifth playoff game between Boston and the New York Yankees. The Red Sox, who had been down 3-0 to the Yankees, went on to win the next four and advance to the World Series.

When the Sox's David Ortiz smacked a 14th-inning single, Shriver jumped off the sofa with excitement but landed on one of her kids' wayward shoes, breaking her foot.

"She was hollering at her kids to pick up their misplaced shoes, but she's realized her instructions fell on deaf ears," spokeswoman Terri Carbaugh said Thursday.

"It goes to show it's easier to ... defeat the curse of the Bambino than it is to get one's child to do as (he or she) is told, as most mothers can relate to," Carbaugh said.

Shriver and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger have four children.

Shriver was wearing a brace, and doctors said it would take about three months for the injury to heal. But it won't slow her down - she was expected to appear Thursday at a Los Angeles Leadership Academy banquet, where she and her father, Sargent Shriver, will be recognized for their public service.

Before Boston swept St. Louis to win the World Series, some Red Sox fans believed a "curse" had held their team back since the owner sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1920.

Then read the "RPCVs for Kerry" statement of support and statements by Dr. Robert Pastor, Ambassador Parker Borg, and Paul Oostburg Sanz made at the "RPCVs for Kerry" Press Conference.

RPCV Carl Pope says the key to winning this election is not swaying undecided voters, but persuading those already willing to vote for your candidate to actually go to the polls.

Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention
Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
