Mark Gearan, president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve on the board of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Gearan was nominated by President George Bush. The corporation, best known for overseeing AmeriCorps, promotes community-based service. He has served on the board since 2000 and was initially nominated by President William Clinton.

When named president of Hobart and William Smith, Gearan was serving as director of the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C., a post he assumed in 1995. Under his leadership, the Peace Corps experienced a resurgence of interest.

“I am honored by the Senate’s confirmation to this important board and grateful to President Bush for his nomination,” Gearan said. “I look forward to advancing the ethic of service in our country with the various streams of service.”

Gearan also serves on the board of the Partnership of Public Service, a group aimed at encouraging young people to pursue federal service careers. Additionally, he serves as chairman of the National Campus Compact and is a member of the Independent College Fund of New York.

A Bill Clinton Republican. Same Old Same Old.
They will do anything for work. Values? What Values? Don't tell us you are a democrat. How many people have been killed on both sides of the war? And you want to do community service. Aren't you nice?
