DNC Launches "APIA Voice"

Largest Asian Pacific Islander American Voter Drive in History

Washington, DC – Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Terry McAuliffe today announced the launch of APIA Voice, the largest Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) Get Out the Vote drive in the history of presidential politics. APIA Voice will target voters in key battleground states to increase APIA voter turnout and elect John Kerry and other Democratic candidates this November.

"Our APIA Voice program will be instrumental in deciding this year's presidential election," said McAuliffe during the announcement. "For four years George W. Bush has failed the APIA Community on jobs, health care, and education. But on November 2nd the Democratic Party will be proud to say that the APIA Community helped change all that by electing John Kerry, who will lead the country in a new direction."

The DNC's APIA Voice is embarking on a robust strategy to mobilize the APIA community. Through both English and native language advertisements, mailings and campaign literature, APIA Voice is actively working to educate voters about Bush's wrong choices for the APIA community and John Kerry's plan to ensure all Americans have an equal opportunity to realize their full potential. As a result of Bush's failed policies, last year 240,000 APIA's fell into poverty, APIA household incomes dropped by over $3,800, and 96,000 APIA's lost their health insurance.

On the ground, APIA Voice has hired and trained Field Directors and Field Organizers in key battleground states to increase APIA Democratic voter turnout in the November election. APIA Voice staff will work with thousands of volunteers to contact APIA voters through in-language phone banking centers and door-to-door canvassing.

During the final weeks of the campaign, community leaders like Governor Gary Locke (WA) and Congressman Mike Honda (CA) will lead Get Out The Vote rallies around the country. These events will culminate on Election Day, November 2nd, when APIA Voice will mount the largest get-out-the-vote program ever, bringing APIA voters to the polls in record numbers.

"On November 2nd, the APIA Community will vote in record numbers, and the record will show the APIA Community helped elect John Kerry as the next President and other Democratic candidates across the country," McAuliffe continued.

Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
