[Excerpt]
My old friend Joe Tomaino has worked out at University of South Florida for decades. When I talked to him Tuesday, it was about his brief time in Chile with his wife, JoAnn, when they were both in the Peace Corps.
``We were there in 1964 during the elections between Eduardo Frei and the communist, Salvador Allende. At night you could hear the gunfire and the explosions. It was a time of fear, when people stayed in their homes and were afraid of what might happen at any minute.
``I thought about that today. With all of the lawyers and problems with voting machines, what is happening here doesn't happen in very many parts of the world. It makes me feel good.''

| Schwarzenegger praises PC at Convention Governor Schwarzenegger praised the Peace Corps at the Republican National Convention: "We're the America that sends out Peace Corps volunteers to teach village children." Schwarzenegger has previously acknowledged his debt to his father-in-law, Peace Corps Founding Director Sargent Shriver, for teaching him "the joy of public service" and Arnold is encouraging volunteerism by creating California Service Corps and tapping his wife, Maria Shriver, to lead it.
