PEACE CORPS WIDENS ITS ACTIVITY IN AZERBAIJAN

Oath-taking ceremony of the second group of Peace Corps volunteers took place at the Sumgait Chemists’ Cultural Center named after Uzeyir Hajibeyov, October 9. The “Peace Corps” was founded in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, who challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries.
Collaborating with local community members, Volunteers work in areas like education, youth outreach and community development, the environment, and information technology.
Some 100 Volunteers of the Corps will stay in Azerbaijani for two years living in backcountry districts’ families to learn Azeri language, Azerbaijani culture, as well as conduct trainings and seminars for English language teachers and teach schoolchildren.
After the oath-taking ceremony, the Volunteers were presented job assignments to the secondary schools in Yardimly, Shamkir, Agsu, Siyazan and other provinces.
