Loss of Crow's Nest would worsen local life
Date published: 1/31/2004
There are many reasons why the citizens of Stafford County should unite behind the efforts to save Crow's Nest. The obvious reason is that it is a unique ecological and historic treasure.
For those who love this area, it is a chance to save a part of it for all time, so that our children and grandchildren will have the opportunity to know the unbelievable beauty that was once everywhere we looked. Look around now and see what is left of what once was.
For those who believe that everything looks better with a layer of concrete, consider this. The current zoning will allow 2,500 homes. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that the new-student population from those homes will necessitate the building of at least one high school, one middle school, and two elementary schools. Can you say $100 million just for the structures?
The tax receipts won't even begin to cover the operating expenses, let alone the buildings. Residents will pick up that tab in much higher taxes and even worse traffic; increased stress on police, fire, and social services; and all the other joys that sprawl is known to engender.
We can find a way to save this land, and in doing so, save ourselves. If you agree, you can do something positive right now. Write a letter of support to this newspaper. Contact your elected officials. Democracy only works for you when you work for it.
