Obituary for Belize RPCV Paul Dwight Davis
Davis, Paul Dwight
June 19, 1922 -
June 1, 2008
Paul passed away peacefully from abdominal cancer in Bothell, Wash., following a short illness. He was born in Torrington, Conn., to Clarence and Ruth Davis. During World War II, Paul served in the army as a high-speed Morse code operator for four years. After the war, Paul completed degrees at Middlebury College and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.
Paul's initial vocation was journalism, working as a reporter at The Providence Journal. In 1948, he married Phoebe Browning. The new couple lived and worked for six months in post-war Europe, supported in part by a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship awarded Paul by the Columbia School of Journalism. Paul eventually moved into university public relations and, subsequently development and administration, working at Brown University, New College in Sarasota, Fla. and, finally, at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay (UWGB).
Paul took early retirement from UWGB at the age of 58 and, from 1983 to 1986, he and Phoebe served in the Peace Corps in Belize, Central America. Upon leaving the Peace Corps, Paul and Phoebe settled in Morelia, Mexico, where they lived happily for seven years until Phoebe's death in 1994.
In 1996, Paul met fellow Middlebury graduate Janet Roberts at a college reunion. The two formed a close companionship and lived together in Montclair and Princeton, N.J., for 10 years until Janet succumbed to Parkinson's disease. Paul then moved to Kirkland, Wash., to live near his son's family.
Paul's life was characterized by his lively intellect and quick wit, his kind and gentle nature, his generosity to many charities and causes, his loyal and steadfast love of his family, and his close and long-running friendships. He was an avid correspondent and in his early 20s began writing a personal journal that grew to 42 volumes by the time of his death.
Paul is survived by his sister, Ruth Kaufman; brother, Robert Davis; children, Brenda Davis, Boston, Mass.; and Dwight Davis, Kirkland, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Dunphy; and grandchildren, Greg and Anna Davis.
We invite Paul's friends to join us in a celebration of his life to be held on Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m., at the First Congregational Church of Bellevue, 752 108th Ave. NE, Bellevue, Washington.

| Dodd vows to filibuster Surveillance Act Senator Chris Dodd vowed to filibuster the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that helped this administration violate the civil liberties of Americans. "It is time to say: No more. No more trampling on our Constitution. No more excusing those who violate the rule of law. These are fundamental, basic, eternal principles. They have been around, some of them, for as long as the Magna Carta. They are enduring. What they are not is temporary. And what we do not do in a time where our country is at risk is abandon them." |
