since my Peace Corps service. I have been PC staff twice, established the
Small Project Assistance Program, and managed a USAID grant called the

Peace Corps was a gift. It exposed me to the wonderous people of
Chad. The gift of the Chadians were themselves! My sojourn in this
desert country has so enriched the expansion of myself. My
experiences in Chad remain very special and are very close to my
heart.

I moved to the Washington, DC area in late 1969 where I have lived ever
since. I was in private law practice IN DC for four years, and I have worked
for the Federal government since 1974. I am currently Deputy Director of
the Department of Energy Office of Hearings and Appeals.
Any thoughts you have now looking back on peace corps days?:
I have fond memories of the PC experience. It gave me a broader
perspective on the world that I will never lose. I believe that all Americans
should be required to give one or two years of national service.

I did graduate work at Indiana University in Linguistics and African languages; I became a Peace Corps language trainer and African language textbook writer, and then I spent 5 years in the Nigerian university system, developing a primary school curriculum for the the Kanuri language for the government of Nigeria; I work now as a consultant in educational reform, specializing in linguistic and cultural reform, today I'm also an associate professor of African Languages and Linguistics at Boston University, African Studies Center/Department of Modern Foreign Languages & Literatures

Any RPCVs interested in a short-term volunteer opportunity in Jordan? The America's Unofficial Ambassadors (AUA) program at Creative Learning is dedicated to expanding and supporting private American citizens' service in the Muslim World. From January 6-15 2012, AUA will lead a group of volunteers to Jordan to support local community development initiatives, learn about Jordanian culture, and meet face-to-face with Jordanian families and university students. Volunteers will spend 4 days working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for poor families in the north of the country. They will also engage in discussion with civil society groups in Amman and Irbid to learn more about Jordanian culture, share insight into American culture, and discuss challenges common to both societies. The Building Peace by Building Homes trip to Jordan will end with visits to Petra (one of the modern 7 Wonders of the World) and the Dead Sea.
The trip is the first in a series of three Building Peace by Building Homes trips that CL will lead in 2012 [Additional trips to Tajikistan (May) and Indonesia (July) are still being planned].
