Santo Domingo.- El vicepresidente de la República, doctor Rafael Alburquerque, recibió en su despacho del Palacio Nacional al director del Cuerpo de Paz de los Estados Unidos, Aaron Williams, quien arribó al país el pasado 31 de agosto para una visita de dos días, la cual concluye hoy.
Alburquerque conversó con Williams y el Encargado de Negocios de la Embajada Norteamericana en el país, Cristopher Lambert, sobre el trabajo del Cuerpo de Paz, y otros tópicos nacionales e internacionales, así como de los planes sociales que el vicemandatario y presidente en funciones, ante la ausencia del Presidente Leonel Fernández, coordina a través del Gabinete de Políticas Sociales.
Williams, quien es el decimoctavo director del Cuerpo de Paz en toda la historia de este organismo regional, estuvo como voluntario en nuestro país durante los años 1967 y 1970, y durante ese tiempo conoció a la dominicana que hoy es su esposa, y con quien se casó por esos años.
Asimismo, Williams fue juramentado como director actual del Cuerpo de Paz el pasado 24 de agosto, por el presidente de los Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, luego de ser confirmado para el cargo por el Senado, el pasado 8 de Agosto, quedando como el cuarto director de esa entidad benéfica norteamericana.
Durante su visita al país, Williams sostendrá varias reuniones con funcionarios de la Embajada de Estados Unidos, así como con entidades de todo el país y específicamente de Monte Plata, donde trabajó como voluntario y entrenador de maestros rurales durante los años que prestó sus servicios al país.
Williams es miembro además del Consejo de Relaciones Exteriores y del Comité de Asesores de la USAID, en el capítulo de Asistencia Internacional Voluntaria, es parte también de los asesores del Programa de Becarios Ron Brown, en la Juta de directores de CARE, y en las Juntas del Instituto para Comunidades Sostenibles.
